Recent volcanic activity in Indonesia: updates and impacts

The latest updates from EXO Indonesia

Since the start of December, there have been a series of significant seismic events in Indonesia. To date, EXO’s tours have not been affected but our team in Indonesia is monitoring the recent eruptions and ongoing developments, with our top priority being the safety and well-being of travellers.

Despite these volcanic activities, it’s worth noting that Jakarta’s Soekarno Hatta Airport continues to operate as usual. There have been no disruptions to air travel, and the airport remains fully operational.

Here is the most current and comprehensive information about the Indonesian volcano activity:

Mount Marapi, West Sumatra: Ongoing Eruptions

Mount Marapi, located in West Sumatra, erupted on 3 December around 15.00. Unfortunately more than 20 climbers are missing and  a further 11 have been confirmed dead.

As of 5 December, the Marapi volcano continues its eruption phase. This volcanic activity has been monitored closely by local authorities, though no significant changes have been reported.

The ash from the volcano has spread across the Agam district in West Sumatra, but North Sumatra is still safe to travel and has not been affected.

*Please note: despite the similar names, this is different Mt Merapi in Yogyakarta, Java. More information on Merapi below.

Mount Merapi, Yogyakarta, Java: Minor Eruption

Recently, Mount Merapi near Yogyakarta experienced a small-scale volcanic eruption, sending a 500-metre column of ash into the air, affecting the nearby Sleman area. Despite this, it’s important to note that such events have become relatively common since the last major eruption of Mt. Merapi. Mt Merapi has been closed to hikers since 2010.

According to EXO’s team in Yogyakarta, there has been no significant impact on tourism activities. Tours in the region are proceeding as normal, and there’s no immediate cause for alarm for travellers or agents concerned about tour disruptions.

Mount Anak Krakatau, Banten – West Java: Twin Eruptions

On 4 December, Mt. Anak Krakatau, located between Banten and West Java, erupted twice. Volcanic ash was ejected up to 2000 metres into the atmosphere and spread towards the northwest region of Indonesia. The PVMBG (Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation) is closely monitoring the situation, providing necessary updates as they come in. They have issued warnings about potential strong ocean currents in the south of Indonesia and the possibility of subsequent earthquakes.

While the situation at Mt. Merapi seems to be stable and not affecting local tours, the recent eruptions at Mt. Anak Krakatau warrant closer attention due to their potential impact on nearby ocean currents and seismic activity.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to monitor these and other seismic activities in the region.
